Scarlett Letter #72: Tweets Collection 2009–Dozen favorites, Part I

Typically, when I send out a tweet, I think to myself: Wow, this is a resourceful link and/or information. I really hope that my colleagues in the AEC industry review this as a means to grow their businesses and careers. Are the people that can benefit from this information really listening and learning?

But then, I realize that the AEC community is still a  long way from having an active presence in the twitter community. So while those of you who subscribe to this blog via an RSS feed are certainly on the right track, you may still be missing out ...

Scarlett Letter #71: To judge or not to judge

After 29 hours of door-to-door travel, I decided I must dedicate this post to my takeaway from all the havoc.

I’m typically a third world traveler. For over a decade, I’ve focused on visiting developing or semi-developed countries. This holiday season, I took my first trip in at least 12 years to Western Europe. The plan: Chicago to London; switch planes; London to Dusseldorf. Because holiday traveling is always a ‘challenge’, I had raised my tolerence level for mishaps.

Even so, I (falsely!) took comfort in the fact that despite traveling during the craziest time of the year, at least I’d be arriving ...

Scarlett Letter #70: No emotion in business? Quite the opposite.

When I was at university, my sweetheart’s father worked at Phillip Morris USA. He was a good guy, and fairly senior in the corporation. We respected his business savvy. He used to say: “Kids, there’s no emotion in business.” Kinda funny coming from a guy with such a big heart.

Of course, I have found the exact opposite to be true. There’s abundant emotion in business. In some ways, that’s a good thing. It’s what makes working together fulfilling. It’s what makes sales people connect and build relationships. It’s what makes technical staff go above and beyond the call of duty ...

Scarlett Letter #69: Vague is the plague…

“Vague is the plague; specific is terrific!” my friend Jayne said emphatically last night. “This was a mantra of my friend’s sixth grade teacher.”

Huh, I thought. That must have been one sharp sixth grade class!

Jayne was recounting a story of a senior networking meeting that she attended last week. Here’s how it went down:

A group of C-level professionals—out of work—went around a table and stated the ‘role’ they sought in their job search, along with the names of several companies that they are targeting for a new position. Done. End of story. No elaboration needed.

At that point, others around ...

Scarlett Letter #68: What does your firm *DO* with good advice?

As a contributing writer to RainToday—site dedicated to articles/research/resources specifically focused on business development/marketing for all professional services industries—I can honestly say that their content is rich and valuable.

Yet, although I have no real proof, I postulate that readers of this quality business-related content go through a process that looks something like this (varying, of course, based on each reader’s level of understanding, belief, motivation, energy, and resources):

1. Read and absorb: ideas, advice, vast amounts of relevant, timely knowledge

2. Bring it to the attention of colleagues in the workplace

3. Champion certain aspects–whether it be related to strategy, tactics, or both

4. ...

Scarlett Letter #67: AEC social media success story

Recently, Modern Steel Construction published my two-part article on social media for the AEC business professional:

DEMYSTIFYING SOCIAL MEDIA, PART 1 What is it, and what makes sense for the AEC industry?

DEMYSTIFYING SOCIAL MEDIA, PART 2 The intent is simple: give value, get visibility.

I received a highly skeptical response from one reader, who, while acknowledging that there might be a place for social media in our industry, was also quite concerned that AEC professionals would morph into beings that would be unable to lecture on their expertise; resistant to in-person, ‘real’ dialogue; and all together bear resemblance to a machine rather ...

Scarlett Letter #66: Imagine the client’s evaluation of your performance

As we’re finishing up the semester at Columbia College, it’s time for students to submit their teachers’ evaluations. I regret that when I attended university, I rarely completed those evaluations. Now, as an adjunct professor, my student’s go through two evaluations: the online lickert scale version, and the Scarlett essay version.

The Scarlett essay version is my favorite:

1. Cite (at least) one thing going well.

2. Cite (at least) one thing that could be improved upon for next semester, along with solutions/suggestions.

Before they begin their essays, I ask that they reflect back on the very best learning environment that they ever experienced ...

Scarlett Letter #65: Pay it forward–building firm espirit de corps

It’s been a tough year for all of us. Employees have loyally stuck by your firm (and they have also been glad to be working, no doubt!) As this year finally comes to a close, what can you do to make their experience more rewarding? How might your firm build a stronger espirt de corps by organizing a way for people in your own firm to execute—and share—their own good deeds towards one another, towards your clients, and towards society at large?

One answer: Pay it forward. The concept of ‘pay it forward’ is not new. According to Wikipedia, this expression ...
