Earlier this morning, this inviting announcement tantalized me to attend a meditative ceremony tonight, the longest day of the year: Summer solstice marks the middle of growing season, as plants flourish and we cultivate them to ensure an abundant harvest. It is the longest day of the year, with the most light given to us in a 24-hour period. From a spiritual perspective, light pours into our minds, and we are able to clearly perceive and understand what needs to be done. We are given illumination and clear vision concerning our most important affairs, and an inspired plan of action to ensure an abundant harvest in all areas of our own lives.
Admittedly, during the one-hour process, I focused primarily on my personal life, along with ways that I can offer help to others—particularly animals suffering in the Gulf of Mexico. But once I returned home I gave some thought to “professional-me”, and how I can sharply focus on what lies ahead for the remainder of 2010 from a business perspective.
Whether or not you believe that we have extra clarity and understanding on and around the summer solstice (always June 21, of course!), it’s still worthwhile to deeply consider the state of your firm year-to-date. After all, the third quarter is just around the corner.
Ideally, you’ll conduct a mid-year marketing assessment right around now. But if you can’t rally the troops to do that, then at a minimum do what you can control: take some focused quiet time to assess your career and your contributions to your firm. What is going well? What could be improved? What are just a few action steps that you can identify and execute over the next months?
